With some of the largest cities in the Western Hemisphere, it is reasonable to expect Brazil to have fairly comprehensive transportation networks within its cities, this expectation is met. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo each have subway systems (although these are smaller than one might expect for cities of 6 million and 11 million respectively), but the small subway systems are made up for with extensive bus networks that cover nearly every part of each city. The Metros are each crowded at virtually all times of day, but the trains come often and the systems are both quite modern and reliable. Meanwhile, Curitiba in southern Brazil is known in planning and transportation circles worldwide for its progressive planning policies, including its bus rapid transit system featuring high level boarding platforms, prepaid fares, and dedicated bus lanes. Although the Curitiba metropolitan area only has 3 million residents, nearly 2 million one way trips are made on the bus system each day, attesting to the success of the bus system there.
