NMBS/SNCB is the Belgian national rail operator, was founded in 1926. Management of the railway infrastructure was spun off to Infrabel in 2005 to satisfy new EU regulations, while the trains are still operated by NMBS/SNCB. In 2008, NMBS/SNCB carried 207 million passengers over its 2197 miles of track, the overwhelming majority of which are electrified.
