At one time, the Middle East was a regional hub for transportation. Rail lines from Europe, Asia, and Africa all intersected here on account of the area’s natural geography. Geopolitical realities in recent years have severed many of these formerly active rail links. However, the region is home to Africa’s first subway, the world’s smallest subway, and a number of national railway lines within each nation’s borders.
