South America’s expansive size and the distances between large cities makes intercity public transit, especially by rail, quite difficult, and airplane is often used to travel between the largest cities. However, within the continent’s largest cities, one can find some of the world’s most robust transit systems, especially when you consider the shear number of people that they move each day. South America has also been the location of some of the world’s pioneering bus rapid transit systems as governments try to find ways to make their transit systems more efficient without a large budget with which to work.
