MTA Regional Bus Operations operates the largest bus fleet in the United States, with 5,725 buses serving 234 local routes, 71 express bus routes, and 20 Select Bus Service routes as of early 2020. These buses serve all five boroughs and many routes operate 24 hours a day. Most bus routes are part of MTA New York City Bus, while the others are part of MTA Bus and were formerly operated by private companies under the administration of NYCDOT.
The MTA's first order for articulated buses other than the New Flyer D60HF buses and first low floor articulated buses was made in 2010 when the NovaBUS LFS Artic buses were ordered and introduced in to service. In addition to low floors, these buses feature three entrance doors, clean diesel engines, and a rear window. Many are assigned to service on Select Bus Services throughout the five boroughs.

The MTA began operating Prevost X3-45 buses in 2011, when it acquired 90 buses of this type. This marked the first time that the MTA purchased coach buses from a company other than MCI for its express services. Since the initial order in 2011, the MTA purchased an additional 300 Prevost X3-45 buses in 2015 and placed an order for an additional 307 buses of the same type at the end of 2019 that are due to enter service in 2021.
