Considering the size of the United States, it is no surprise that its transportation networks vary along with the country’s geography. Cities such as New York, Boston, and Chicago have been operating their rapid transit systems in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Other cities, such as Washington, Atlanta, and San Francisco are more recent additions, having constructed their systems in the 1960s and 1970s. And cities such as Portland, Oregon and San Diego were at the forefront in terms of building modern streetcar and light rail systems, doing so in the past few decades along with a host of other cities. Finally, Amtrak crisscrosses the entire country with its mix of high speed, regional, and long distance trains; the long distance services, while not quick, do provide passengers with a travel experience that few railroads can offer nowadays.
